Seven days is conditional. When Day 1 is a late international arrival or Day 7 is an early flight, the trip no longer contains enough usable time for three meaningful Beijing chapters and two full Shanghai days. Use eight days instead of compressing the Forbidden City, Great Wall, or city transfer.

Shanghai 2 or 3 Days?
Two Days Show the Contrast; Three Days Add the City's Daily Rhythm
Use two full days: one day for the Bund, old Shanghai, Yu Garden area, and food; one day for Pudong, modern architecture, a museum, or former concession neighborhoods.
Use three full days: add a slower neighborhood route, family program, business-and-leisure module, design and architecture focus, or a nearby water-town day.
Shanghai Disneyland is a full-day replacement, not a short add-on after the Bund. A water town also needs a real day or a longer Shanghai stay.

Train schedules change. Confirm the train number, stations, departure time, arrival time, and seat class through the official China Railway 12306 platform and the issued ticket.
Beijing–Shanghai services commonly use Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao, but the final ticket controls. Do not arrange the vehicle using only the city name.
Old Shanghai
Use the Old City to Keep Shanghai From Becoming Only a Skyline Tour
Yu Garden, the City God Temple area, traditional commercial streets, local snacks, and selected older lanes give the trip an urban layer that differs from both imperial Beijing and Pudong.
The old-city area can be busy and commercial. Use a private guide to select the garden, food, lanes, and architectural details that support the route rather than spending the day following every souvenir street.
Combine it with the Bund when walking comfort, weather, and hotel location support the sequence.
Modern Shanghai
Pudong Should Explain the City, Not Just Provide a Photo
Use the Huangpu River, Pudong skyline, financial district, urban planning, observation options, and the contrast with the Bund to explain Shanghai's rapid growth and global role.
A business traveler may use this day for meetings plus a skyline evening. Families may add a river crossing, open public space, science, art, or an age-appropriate attraction.

Beijing In, Shanghai Out
This is the cleanest first-China sequence for many travelers. Begin with the political and historical capital, move south by rail or air, then finish with Shanghai's international connections, modern city rhythm, dining, and shopping.
Shanghai In, Beijing Out
This works when flights are better or the trip begins with business in Shanghai. The story moves from contemporary China toward the imperial center and the Great Wall. Keep the final Beijing departure day light.
