Thousand-year Buddhist fate: the holy land of the Nanhai Guanyin
Nanshan Cultural Tourism Area is located at the southern foot of Nanshan Mountain, 40 kilometers west of Sanya. Its Buddhist cultural origins can be traced back to the legend of the Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen's fifth eastward voyage. The core landscape of the scenic area, the 108-meter-high Nanshan Sea Guanyin Statue, is the tallest white-robed Guanyin statue in the world. The 108-petal lotus throne forged from titanium alloy is equipped with a Buddhist cultural exhibition hall. The statue adopts the "integrated three-statue" design, facing the mainland, Taiwan and the South China Sea respectively, implying protection of all directions. The newly completed "Guanyin Jingyuan" in 2025 uses holographic projection technology to dynamically reproduce the allusion of "Guanyin's Thirty-three Incarnations" in the "Avatamsaka Sutra".
Nanshan Temple in the scenic area is one of the first Buddhist temples opened in New China. The seated statue of Sakyamuni Buddha enshrined in the Great Hall is 16.9 meters high and is carved from a whole piece of Burmese white jade. The "auspicious bell" ceremony is held every morning, and believers can participate in the bell ringing and praying. The sound of the bell can be heard as far as 10 nautical miles away from the sea. The "Longzang" scripture version treasured in the temple is a copy from the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, and is the same as the copy in the Lama Temple in Beijing.
1. Ecological wonders: a natural painting of mountains and seas embracing each other
The scenic area covers an area of 34.7 square kilometers, of which the native vegetation coverage rate reaches 85%, forming a unique "three-sided Guanyin embracing green mountains" landform. There are more than 30,000 immortal pines growing in the Changshou Valley at the foot of Nanshan Mountain. According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are 17 trees with an age of more than 1,000 years, and the phytoncide they release has significant health benefits. The "Buddha Light Cloud Sea" phenomenon newly discovered in 2025, from October to February of the following year in the early morning, under certain humidity conditions, a colorful halo will appear around the Guanyin statue.
The coastline is dotted with the northernmost coral reef community in my country. The "Ecological Floating Bridge" opened in 2025 allows tourists to observe the spawning process of antler corals at close range. The "Zero Carbon Plan" implemented by the scenic spot has built a photovoltaic power generation system, and the annual reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is equivalent to planting 120,000 trees. The specially designed "Zen Walking Trail" runs through the tropical monsoon forest, with 18 "Heart Sutra" stone carvings along the way, realizing "one step, one scene, one Zen meaning".

The "smart guide" glasses launched in 2025 can recognize Buddhist allusions in architectural patterns in real time. The "Nanhai Buddhist Forum" held every year attracts more than 30 countries to participate, becoming an important platform for the exchange of Chinese and foreign Buddhist cultures. Under the principle of protection priority, the scenic spot strictly limits the daily reception to no more than 12,000 people, and implements silent tour management in the core religious area.
