A Tour of Turpan's Flaming Mountain: Step into the Mythical Red Drago
When it comes to visiting Turpan's Flaming Mountain, the scene from "Journey to the West" where Sun Wukong borrows the palm-leaf fan often comes to mind. In reality, this crimson mountain range stretches across the northern edge of Xinjiang's Turpan Basin, stretching 100 kilometers from east to west and 10 kilometers from north to south. Its surface temperature can reach 70°C in summer, giving it the appearance of a flaming dragon, sweltering with heat waves – hence its name. For a truly fiery experience of the Northwest, a trip to Turpan's Flaming Mountain is a must-see.
The most iconic photo-op at the Turpan Flaming Mountain attraction is the Golden Cudgel thermometer behind the scenic entrance. This 12-meter-tall thermometer displays the surface temperature in real time, and in midsummer, the readings soar. Tourists line up for photos, feeling as if they were in an alchemy furnace. Further in, the "Alchemy Furnace" viewing platform halfway up the mountain offers breathtaking views, overlooking the undulating folds of Flaming Mountain, with its crimson rock formations gleaming metallically under the blazing sun. Every photo is a masterpiece. If you have more time, visit the ruins of the ancient Gaochang City in the back mountains. The ruins, juxtaposed with the Flaming Mountains, will transport you back to the ancient Silk Road.
When it comes to exploring the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, transportation must be planned in advance. The most convenient option is to fly to Urumqi, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Turpan North Station, and then take a 30-minute taxi to the scenic area. Alternatively, you can drive via the Lianhuo Expressway and exit at Turpan. The entire route is paved and easily accessible by car. The entrance fee is 40 yuan, and a round-trip shuttle bus is 20 yuan. During peak season, the gates open at 9:00 a.m., so it's recommended to arrive at 8:30 a.m. to avoid the crowds. A special reminder for those traveling to the Flaming Mountains in Turpan: Ultraviolet rays are extremely strong in the summer, so sunglasses, a sun hat, sun-protective clothing, and ice sleeves are essential. Women should also bring a red scarf to protect against wind and sand while also making photos look good.

Experiencing the heat at the Flaming Mountains in Turpan requires careful timing. Climb to the summit observation deck before 10 AM to take advantage of the low sun and avoid backlight. After 10 PM, head to the Underground Palace Museum for air-conditioned cooling, where you can explore the geological history of Huoyan Mountain and the Journey to the West cultural exhibition, and rest your legs. The surface temperature is highest at noon, so head to the nearby Karez Park for watermelon and iced yogurt (15 yuan for a large cup) for an instant boost. After 4 PM, return to capture backlit silhouettes. The setting sun paints the mountain an orange-red, and the heat waves are so intense that you'll almost see Sun Wukong soaring through the clouds.
The Turpan Huoyan Mountain guide also recommends two more ways to explore. One is an off-road vehicle trek around the mountain: a 4WD vehicle drives along a dry riverbed into the canyon, stirring up dust along the way. Experience the thrill of speed and heat. The entire journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 150 yuan per person. Second, enjoy the nighttime light show: From July to September each year, the scenic area hosts nighttime performances. Projections depicting stories from Journey to the West are projected onto the mountain, complemented by special flame effects, bringing the giant red dragon to life. Tickets are 80 yuan, and reservations are made in advance through the "Turpan Huoyan Mountain Tourism" official account.
For accommodations, the Turpan Huoyan Mountain guide offers two options: If you're looking for starry night photography, stay in a B&B 5 kilometers outside the scenic area, complete with air conditioning and hot water, for just over 100 yuan. For a more relaxed stay, return to Turpan city and stay in a chain hotel. In the evening, you can also visit the Grape Night Market and enjoy some red willow barbecue. Regardless of where you stay, be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. Mineral water in the scenic area is 5 yuan a bottle, and iced watermelon is 10 yuan a piece. While prices are reasonable, queues can be long during busy periods.
If you have more time, combine your visit to Turpan Huoyan Mountain with other nearby attractions: explore Huoyan Mountain in the morning, visit the Karez in the afternoon to see the millennium-old underground water conservancy, and in the evening, enjoy freshly picked seedless white wine in Grape Valley. The next day, go sandboarding in the Kumtag Desert, experiencing three landscapes: flames, oasis, and desert. Don't forget to fully charge your camera battery, because at the Turpan Flaming Mountain scenic spot, every breath of heat is worth capturing, every wrinkle on the earth.
Finally, a reminder: Protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility. Please do not climb over the guardrails on the hiking trails, and take your trash with you, so that those who come after you can also experience the most authentic Turpan Flaming Mountain experience. Pack your bags, book your tickets, and embark on a date with the red dragon!
