Make the decision from usable time
Six scheduled hours: stay at the airport. Eight hours: consider one compact stop only when entry, baggage, airport, and return conditions are favorable. Ten hours: one city cluster can work; a short Great Wall visit becomes a PEK-only candidate under strict conditions. Twelve hours: choose one main city route or one Great Wall route, then protect the outbound flight.
A layover duration alone does not give permission to enter China. Confirm your visa, applicable visa exemption, or temporary-entry eligibility before arranging an airport pickup.
Calculate the time you can actually use
Scheduled layover
− arrival and deplaning
− immigration or temporary-entry processing
− baggage, customs, storage, or recheck
− terminal exit and driver meeting
− travel out and back
− airline check-in, bag-drop, security, and exit procedures
− protected delay margin
= usable time at your destination
Run the calculation from the scheduled arrival of the first flight to the scheduled departure of the second. Then replace estimates with actual conditions after landing. The sightseeing route gets shorter when the inbound flight, immigration, baggage, traffic, or weather takes longer than planned.
Set a hard time for arriving back at the departure terminal. Base it on the operating airline's check-in, bag-drop, document, and boarding requirements, then add enough contingency for outbound security, immigration, terminal movement, and delays. The tour stop never takes priority over that deadline.
What 6, 8, 10, or 12 hours can support
| Scheduled layover | PEK | PKX | Planning decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 hours | Airport lounge, meal, rest, terminal services, or an airport-area hotel when entry is permitted | Airport lounge, meal, rest, terminal services, or an airport-area hotel when entry is permitted | Stay at the airport. Do not plan central Beijing or the Great Wall. |
| 8 hours | One compact city, meal, or evening stop when entry is prompt and bags are through-checked | Airport rest or one carefully selected south-side or south-central stop under favorable conditions | Use a route that can be removed immediately after a delay. Exclude the Great Wall. |
| 10 hours | One city cluster or a short Great Wall candidate when every Great Wall condition is satisfied | Temple of Heaven, Qianmen, a business stop, local meal, or another controlled city cluster | Choose one direction and one anchor. Avoid combining major ticketed attractions. |
| 12 hours | One Great Wall route or a broader central-city route, subject to entry, daylight, weather, and traffic | A south-central or central-city half day, business visit, meal, or hotel rest | Keep one main experience and a removable secondary stop. |
These are planning thresholds, not airport or immigration guarantees.
Two travelers with the same scheduled connection can have different usable time because their terminals, entry basis, baggage, airlines, mobility, onward flights, and arrival delays differ.
PEK and PKX lead in different directions
| Airport | Geographic effect | Stronger layover choices |
|---|---|---|
| PEK Beijing Capital International Airport |
PEK lies on Beijing's northeastern side. This makes northern and eastern routes the first options to evaluate. | Great Wall under strict conditions, Chaoyang or CBD business stop, northeast Beijing, or one central cluster with enough usable time |
| PKX Beijing Daxing International Airport |
PKX is at the junction of Daxing District and Hebei in southern Beijing. Crossing toward the northern Great Wall adds unnecessary exposure to delay. | Temple of Heaven, Qianmen, a south-central meal, business visit, airport hotel, or one central route when the connection is long enough |
Confirm the airport code as well as the terminal. "Beijing airport" is incomplete information. PEK and PKX are separate airports, and an official Beijing source has described them as nearly 70 kilometers apart. Current road conditions and route time still need live checking.
When you arrive at one airport and depart from the other, treat the connection as an inter-airport transfer. Protect the transfer, baggage, check-in, and flight margin first. Sightseeing is added only when an overnight or unusually generous window remains after the complete transfer plan is confirmed.
Can you leave Beijing airport during a layover?
You can leave only after immigration accepts a valid basis for entry. This may be a China visa, an applicable visa-free entry arrangement, or an approved temporary-entry permit under a transit policy.
24-hour visa-free transit
The National Immigration Administration states that eligible international transit passengers may remain within the restricted port area without a visa. Anyone who needs to leave that restricted area must first obtain a temporary-entry permit from immigration at the port.
240-hour visa-free transit
As of August 25, 2026, the policy covers nationals of 57 countries. You need an eligible travel document and a confirmed onward itinerary to a third country or region. The permitted entry is decided during immigration inspection.
A route such as Country A → Beijing → Country A does not meet the third-country transit pattern. Country A → Beijing → Country B can meet that routing condition, although nationality, documents, ports, onward entry requirements, and the immigration review must also qualify.
A tour booking does not prove entry eligibility. Verify the latest policy with the National Immigration Administration, your airline, and the relevant Chinese diplomatic mission when needed.
Stay at the airport when any of these conditions apply
- Your scheduled connection is six hours or less.
- Your entry basis is unclear or immigration has not approved temporary entry.
- The onward destination fails the required third-country transit pattern.
- You must collect and recheck baggage, and the timing or airline process is not confirmed.
- You arrive at PEK and depart from PKX, or vice versa, without time beyond the protected inter-airport transfer.
- The inbound flight is late enough to remove the minimum usable sightseeing period.
- Your airline's check-in, document, bag-drop, or boarding deadline is unknown.
- Weather, daylight, traffic, or scenic-facility conditions make the Great Wall plan fragile.
- Fatigue, young children, limited mobility, or an overnight flight makes airport rest more valuable than a compressed visit.
Luggage can remove the sightseeing window
Through-checked
Confirm directly with the operating airline that the bags are tagged to the final destination. A single booking reference does not settle every baggage arrangement.
Collect and recheck
Subtract baggage delivery, customs, transport with the bags, airline recheck opening, and bag-drop deadlines before considering sightseeing.
Storage or private vehicle
Confirm the live airport storage location and hours, or send the number and size of bags so the private vehicle has enough passenger and luggage capacity.
Self-transfer, separate tickets, airline changes, terminal changes, and an international-to-domestic connection can alter both the passenger and baggage process. Ask the operating airlines for the procedure covering your exact flights.
Choose a Great Wall layover only when every condition works
A Great Wall layover is first evaluated from PEK. PKX lies south of the city, so a Great Wall route creates a longer and less forgiving cross-city plan within a 6–12-hour connection.
Use one Wall section, one ascent and descent system, a short walking target, and a fixed turnaround. Remove any additional attraction or distant restaurant.
A late arrival shortens the Wall visit first. The airport return deadline remains unchanged.

Required Great Wall conditions
- Arrival and departure are both at PEK.
- Entry is approved promptly, and the onward flight requirements are confirmed.
- Bags are through-checked or have a confirmed handling plan.
- A private vehicle and airport meeting point are confirmed.
- The selected section, admission, scenic shuttle, and ascent or descent products are confirmed.
- Daylight, weather, and facility operation support the route.
- Everyone can manage the remaining slopes, stairs, and walking.
- The route preserves the airline-based terminal return deadline after adding a delay margin.
Compare sections, access products, and walking levels through Beijing Great Wall Tours. Admission, scenic transport, cable cars, ropeways, and opening conditions remain under the relevant operators' control.
Use one city cluster that is easy to shorten
| Cluster | Use it for | Remove first |
|---|---|---|
| Temple of Heaven and Qianmen | A south-central route from PKX, one cultural anchor, an old-city walk, and a nearby meal | The secondary neighborhood walk or meal stop |
| Imperial center | Tiananmen-area views, Qianmen, or one reserved landmark with a larger usable window | Any ticketed attraction lacking confirmed entry or adequate exit time |
| Hutong evening | A walk, local dinner, lakeside or old-neighborhood atmosphere, and flexible stopping time | The walk after dinner or any distant viewpoint |
| Business stop | Airport pickup, one meeting or site visit, meal, and direct airport return | Sightseeing and an off-route restaurant |
The Forbidden City requires advance admission, substantial walking, a one-way visitor route, and a clear post-exit pickup plan. Add it only when entry is confirmed and the usable window remains large after protecting the outbound flight.
For a fixed meeting or client visit, use Beijing Business and Leisure Tourism to separate the required appointment from optional sightseeing.
What happens after an inbound delay?
Small loss of usable time
Remove the secondary stop, shorten the meal, and keep the main experience close to its planned stopping point.
Major loss of usable time
Replace the Great Wall or ticketed attraction with a meal, short neighborhood visit, airport hotel, or direct transfer.
Unsafe remaining window
Cancel the sightseeing portion and protect the onward flight. Apply the written cancellation and committed-supplier terms.
Flight monitoring helps the driver and guide adjust pickup. It cannot accelerate immigration, baggage delivery, customs, traffic, airport processing, or attraction entry.
Use an overnight layover differently
Early morning departure: choose an airport-area hotel or a hotel with a confirmed terminal transfer. Keep the evening short and avoid placing the night's final stop far from the departure airport.
Later morning or afternoon departure: a central hotel can support an evening meal, hutong walk, business appointment, or one easy morning stop. Recalculate the complete hotel-to-airport process before confirming the morning activity.
Different departure airport: choose the hotel from the second airport and its required check-in time. Staying near the arrival airport can create a harder morning transfer.
When the connection grows into a two- or three-night stopover, use First-Time Beijing Tours to plan the Forbidden City and Great Wall as separate days.

Check My Beijing LayoverBeijing layover planning FAQs
Can I leave Beijing airport during a six-hour layover?
Entry permission does not make six hours a workable sightseeing window. Immigration, baggage, both transfers, security, outbound processing, and delay protection leave too little controllable time. Stay at the airport.
Is eight hours enough to visit central Beijing?
It can support one compact stop when both flights use the same airport, entry is prompt, bags are through-checked, transportation is ready, and the outbound deadline leaves a protected margin. Keep the route easy to cancel after a delay.
Can I see the Great Wall on a ten-hour PEK layover?
It can work after entry, baggage, weather, daylight, Wall access, private transport, and the airport-return deadline are confirmed. Use a short route with a fixed turnaround. A late inbound arrival should trigger a city stop or airport return.
Should I visit the Great Wall from PKX?
A 6–12-hour PKX connection is better used for a south-central city route, business stop, meal, or hotel. The Great Wall lies in the opposite direction and creates too much cross-city exposure for most layovers.
What if I land at PEK and depart from PKX?
Plan an inter-airport transfer first. Confirm baggage, vehicle, terminal, airline deadlines, and a delay margin. Add sightseeing only when an overnight or unusually long connection leaves usable time after the entire transfer is protected.
Does 24-hour visa-free transit let me leave the airport?
Airside visa-free transit does not automatically authorize entry into Beijing. The National Immigration Administration states that anyone leaving the restricted port area must obtain a temporary-entry permit when that requirement applies. Immigration makes the decision at the port.
