Make the first cut with four questions
Choose Mutianyu for flexible walking, cable-car-supported sightseeing, mountain scenery, and a route that can be shortened for children or older family members. Choose Badaling when its landmark status, developed visitor facilities, night program, or rail access matters more. Move to Jinshanling for a dedicated photography or hiking day. Consider Simatai when a scheduled night visit or Gubei Water Town stay is part of the plan.
Your pickup point and final drop-off can change that answer. A route from a northeast Beijing hotel or PEK does not work the same way as one from Haidian, southern Beijing, or PKX.

Quick section matrix
Mutianyu: Start here for a first private visit, family day, moderate walking, or photography without committing to a strenuous hike.
Badaling: Start here when you want the most recognized restored section, extensive facilities, rail-compatible planning, or a currently scheduled night tour.
Jinshanling: Use a full day when walking and landscape photography are the main purpose.
Simatai: Plan around its controlled open area, cable-car operation, reservation rules, and the Gubei Water Town schedule.
Mutianyu vs Badaling at a glance
| Decision point | Mutianyu | Badaling |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest fit | Families, first visits, private groups, moderate walkers, and photographers | Travelers prioritizing landmark recognition, developed facilities, rail access, or a scheduled night visit |
| Scenery and route feel | Mountain ridgelines and several ways to control walking distance | Broad, strongly restored Wall views with separate north and south route decisions |
| Mechanical access | Cable car, ropeway, and slide-related products are separate; tickets are not interchangeable | Cable-car access can reduce the approach, with the north or south route selected before entry |
| Walking reality | Easy to shorten, though stone steps, slopes, and exposed sections remain | Some popular stretches are steeper than they appear in photos; crowd flow affects pace |
| Transport advantage | Usually the first section to evaluate from PEK or northeast Beijing | Useful when high-speed rail or suburban rail fits the wider itinerary |
| Main trade-off | Shuttle and access-system choices add steps to the arrival procedure | Heavier visitor flow can reduce photo time and make short walking routes feel slower |
Choose Mutianyu when route flexibility matters
Mutianyu works well when the group does not share one walking level. You can use mechanical access to reach an elevated part of the Wall, set a short first target, and extend the walk only while everyone remains comfortable. The official scenic-area route currently describes a cable-car trip to the No. 14 viewing platform followed by a short visit around No. 15 as a lower-exertion option.
That makes Mutianyu a practical starting point for a family with children, an older parent, or anyone who wants strong views without turning the day into a long hike. It also leaves room for a more active route toward higher watchtowers when the weather, operating hours, and group stamina support it.
Choose Mutianyu when:
- You want a short scenic walk with the option to continue.
- Children and adults have different energy levels.
- Mountain layers, foliage, or ridgeline photography matter.
- Your pickup is at PEK, in Chaoyang, or elsewhere in northeast Beijing.
- You can confirm the shuttle, cable car, ropeway, or descent arrangement before arrival.
Mutianyu is a weaker choice when your main priority is reaching the Wall independently by train, visiting a specific Badaling night program, or following a route tied to northwest Beijing. Review the available pickup, guide, vehicle, and access arrangements on the Beijing Great Wall Tours page after choosing the section.
Choose Badaling when facilities or transport structure lead the decision
Badaling suits a first visit when seeing the most recognized restored section carries real value for your group. It has developed visitor infrastructure, north and south sightseeing routes, cable-car access, and a railway station served by the Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed rail line.
Its transport options can be valuable when a private vehicle is not part of the plan. Rail still requires a workable departure station, an available train, a confirmed ticket, and enough time between the station, scenic-area procedures, and your return. Check live railway inventory through China Railway 12306 rather than copying an old timetable from a travel article.
Choose Badaling when:
- The famous restored section is a personal or family priority.
- You want developed facilities and a clearly managed scenic area.
- A rail-based route fits your hotel and departure station.
- A verified seasonal night tour is the main experience.
- Your next destination places you west or northwest of central Beijing.
Crowd timing matters more here. On busy weekends and public holidays, keep the Great Wall as the day's main experience, leave room for entrance and cable-car queues, and remove any central-Beijing attraction with a fixed entry time.
The easiest Great Wall section depends on what you mean by "easy"
Easiest arrival without a private vehicle
Badaling usually deserves the first comparison because rail service can remove the road-transfer decision.
Easiest adjustable sightseeing route
Mutianyu often works better when you want mechanical access followed by a short, extendable watchtower walk.
Easiest for limited mobility
Neither section should be described as step-free. Confirm gradients, stairs, walking aids, balance limits, and the exact operating access route.
A cable car saves the long uphill approach. Once you reach the Wall, stone steps, ramps, uneven surfaces, exposed ridgelines, and changing gradients remain. A short route also needs a clear turnaround point. Walking "until someone gets tired" usually means the return becomes the hardest part.
For knee pain, reduced balance, recent surgery, a walking aid, or frequent seated-rest needs, compare the route in more detail through Beijing Senior-Friendly Tours. Mechanical access and private transport reduce exertion; neither removes mountain terrain or weather exposure.
Match the section to the people traveling
| Trip profile | First section to evaluate | What changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| First Beijing visit | Mutianyu for route flexibility; Badaling for landmark recognition or rail logistics | Hotel district, transport preference, crowd tolerance, and next stop |
| Family with children | Mutianyu with a short cable-car-supported route | Child's age, stroller plan, fear of heights, restroom needs, and descent preference |
| Older family members | The section with the most workable confirmed access route that day | Knees, balance, stairs, walking aids, heat, wind, and need for seated rest |
| Photography | Mutianyu for a flexible first photo day; Jinshanling for a dedicated landscape day | Season, light, haze, weather, tripod needs, walking load, and return after sunset |
| Active hiking | Jinshanling, subject to current open routes and cable-car operation | Fitness, footwear, weather, daylight, open gates, and vehicle meeting point |
| PEK layover | Mutianyu under a generous usable land-side window | Immigration, baggage, terminal, traffic, entry permission, and airline return requirement |
For children and grandparents traveling together, build the route around the least mobile adult and the youngest child. The wider Beijing itinerary may also need slower mornings, predictable meals, and only one major attraction per day. See Beijing Family Tours for that planning structure.
Your departure point is the hidden decision variable
Central Beijing hotel
Check the hotel district before comparing sections. Mutianyu lies toward northeast Beijing; Badaling lies northwest. A Chaoyang or northeast pickup often favors Mutianyu, while a Haidian or northwest pickup can strengthen the Badaling route. Traffic, day of week, and the return destination still matter.
PEK: Beijing Capital Airport
PEK is in northeast Beijing, and Mutianyu is in Huairou to the north and northeast of the city. This usually makes Mutianyu the first section to test for an airport route. A workable plan still needs a generous land-side window after immigration, baggage, customs, and terminal movement.
PKX: Beijing Daxing Airport
PKX is south of Beijing. Both main Great Wall choices require a long northbound route, so a rushed airport–Wall–airport plan carries too much exposure to traffic and return delays. A city route, overnight stay, or later Great Wall day usually uses the trip better.

For a layover, calculate usable time first:
Scheduled layover − deplaning and entry procedures − baggage and customs − drive out − scenic-area procedures − return drive − airline and airport buffer = usable Wall time.
Entry permission, flight handling, baggage rules, and airport procedures remain under the relevant authorities and airline. Review Beijing Layover Tours before treating a connection as sightseeing time.
When Jinshanling is worth the extra commitment
Choose Jinshanling when the Great Wall itself is the day's main project. It gives an active photographer or hiker more reason to walk between towers and work with changing mountain layers. Hebei's official tourism information describes Jinshanling as a recognized photography destination and confirms that the scenic area has a cableway.
Jinshanling demands firmer planning than Mutianyu. Give it a full day, confirm the operating entrance and cableway close to departure, set a turnaround time, and keep enough daylight for the descent. Seasonal fire controls, weather, maintenance, and gate arrangements can change the usable route.
Jinshanling vs Mutianyu
Keep Mutianyu for a first visit, family group, moderate walk, PEK route, or day that needs an easy shortening point.
Move to Jinshanling when longer walking, landscape photography, and a full Wall-focused day justify the additional logistics.
Jinshanling is a poor default for toddlers, strollers, limited mobility, a short layover, or a day that already contains a major central-Beijing attraction.
When Simatai makes more sense
Simatai becomes relevant when you want to combine the Wall with Gubei Water Town, stay overnight in the area, or use an officially scheduled night route. The first-party Gubei Water Town page places Simatai northeast of Beijing and currently states that only East Towers 2 through 10 are open. It also states that the westward hiking connection toward Jinshanling is closed.
Plan Simatai as its own destination. Confirm the open towers, reservation procedure, cable-car operation, night access, and Gubei Water Town arrangements for the exact date. Do not use an old article to assume that a full Simatai–Jinshanling crossing is available.
For a simple first Great Wall day from a Beijing hotel, Mutianyu or Badaling normally creates a cleaner decision. Simatai earns the longer route when the evening setting or overnight stay is central to the trip.
Weather, closures, and the return plan
Mountain weather can change access before city conditions look serious. Rain, snow, ice, thunderstorms, fog, strong wind, and extreme heat affect walking speed, visibility, mechanical facilities, and scenic-area operations. Mutianyu's official visitor notice states that severe weather or uncontrollable natural events can trigger temporary or partial closure.
| Condition | Change the route this way | Remove first |
|---|---|---|
| Heat or strong sun | Start earlier, shorten the watchtower target, carry water, and protect the descent | Long lunch detour or second attraction |
| Rain, snow, or ice | Reconfirm opening and access systems; keep a city-based replacement ready | Long hike, slide descent, and exposed photo route |
| Heavy crowds | Protect an early start and use one section only | Fixed city reservation after the Wall |
| Flight or train deadline | Work backward from required arrival time and set a firm Wall turnaround | Extra tower, long meal, shopping stop, or scenic detour |
The vehicle meeting point, last usable descent, and return destination should be confirmed before you go up. A short delay near the final watchtower can turn into a much larger delay after queues, shuttle movement, and the drive back are added.
Official details checked on August 5, 2026
- Mutianyu: The official homepage publishes current daytime hours. It currently states that night tours are suspended from July 13 through August 10, 2026, with extended daytime opening during that period. Check the official Mutianyu website again for your date.
- Mutianyu tickets and access: The official visitor notice requires real-name ticketing, explains passport entry, and states that admission, shuttle, cable car, ropeway, and slide products are separate. Cable-car and ropeway/slide tickets are not interchangeable. See the official visitor notice.
- Badaling daytime entry: Beijing's current English government page lists seasonal daytime hours and says tickets may be purchased on site without a reservation. Recheck the live official channel because ticketing procedures can change. See the Beijing government Badaling page.
- Badaling night tour: The 2026 government notice states that the seasonal night tour runs from April 30 through October 6, with admission checks from 18:30 to 21:00. This is a dated 2026 arrangement. Confirm it through the official 2026 notice before relying on it.
- Badaling rail: Beijing government transport information confirms that Badaling Great Wall Station is served by the Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed railway. Check train dates, stations, and inventory through China Railway 12306. See the official Beijing transport overview.
- Jinshanling: Hebei's official tourism page confirms the scenic area's cableway and its established photography appeal. Opening gates and cableway schedules still need date-specific confirmation. See the Hebei tourism information.
- Simatai: The Gubei Water Town first-party page currently describes the open tower range, closed westward connection, and cable-car access. Check the official Simatai information.
- Airports: PEK is in northeast Beijing, while PKX is in southern Beijing. These locations explain why the same Wall section does not fit both airport routes. See the official Beijing information for PEK/Shunyi and PKX.
What can be adjusted in a private Great Wall day
Adjustable route items
Pickup and drop-off point, section, walking target, ascent and descent preference, guide service, meal plan, photo time, and hard return deadline.
Listed separately in the quote
Private vehicle, English-speaking guide, admission, scenic shuttle, cable car or other access product, meal, airport service, and extra waiting time.
Excluded unless written into the quote
Unlisted tickets, meals, personal purchases, optional activities, airfare, accommodation, visa services, and costs caused by personal itinerary changes.
AOXIANG cannot guarantee scenic-area opening, ticket inventory, cable-car or slide operation, weather, traffic conditions, flight punctuality, or permission to enter China during a layover. When conditions change, the route may need a shorter Wall walk, another restored section, a city-based replacement, or cancellation under the terms confirmed in your quotation.
When the Great Wall is part of a wider first visit, place it on its own day and organize the remaining landmarks around confirmed entries and walking load. Compare First-Time Beijing Tours or build the complete sequence through Beijing Private Tours.

Plan My Great Wall DayGreat Wall section FAQs
Is Mutianyu or Badaling the easiest Great Wall section?
Badaling can be easier for independent rail access. Mutianyu usually gives a private group more control over walking distance when an operating cable-car-supported route is used. Neither section is flat or fully step-free once you are on the Wall.
Mutianyu or Badaling from PEK?
Mutianyu is usually the first route to evaluate because PEK and Huairou are both northeast of central Beijing. Flight timing, immigration, luggage, terminal movement, weather, traffic, and the protected airport-return time can still remove the Great Wall from a short layover.
Jinshanling vs Mutianyu for photography?
Use Mutianyu for a first photo-focused visit with easier route adjustment. Give Jinshanling a full day when walking between towers and landscape photography are the main purpose. Confirm the operating gate, cableway, weather, and daylight before choosing Jinshanling.
Which Great Wall section can I visit at night?
Night access is seasonal and date-specific. As verified on August 5, 2026, Badaling's published 2026 night season runs through October 6. Mutianyu currently has a temporary night-tour suspension through August 10, 2026. Simatai can also support planned night visits tied to current Gubei Water Town arrangements. Recheck the official page before booking transport.
Does Badaling's train connection make it the better choice?
It strengthens Badaling when your hotel, departure station, train inventory, and return plan line up. It carries less weight for a private vehicle route, a PEK pickup, a family needing flexible walking, or a photographer who wants more control over time on the Wall.
